Jayaruh #143

February 7, 2017

I received two small horse hair knots in a trade recently, and I decided to use one for a new Jayaruh brush. I had made a razor stand last year that I thought would make a nice handle for a small brush. I widened the hole and set the new knot in it to create the new Jayaruh #143 horse hair brush.

Originally a razor stand.

All in all, an excellent shave. The Tabac and the Veg seem to work well together.

Jayaruh #32 Completed

I had started this brush earlier, but I had messed up on the blank somewhat. On December 1, I finished the #32 in a day by working around the imperfections, and set it aside for a while. Again, I was negligent in taking pictures of the procedure. However, I did stain it with red oak stain, polyurethaned it, and set the horse hair brush with silicone. Today, December 12, I did the test lather.

Jayaruh #33: Brother of JR16

Today, I started to finish what will be Jayaruh #33. It is made from the same blank of wild cherry that I made JR16 from way back in August. I wanted to put one of the horse hair knots in it and call it my cowboy brush. I have no pictures of the steps, but I put the hole in it and shaped and sanded it. Then I stained it with golden oak stain. I will be putting some polyurethane on it later today, but I wanted to get some glamour shots of it with the knot dry fitted. See its brother here.

Original block of wild cherry.

Update: December 13
I finally got around to doing a test lathering with some Cella Shave Soap. As you can see, it made lots of lather. Then I took a picture with my new Scotch & Stowe Fatty DE razor.

Jayaruh #31 and Jayaruh #32 Begin

Today, I worked on the #31 and #32. They are both made from the walnut stock I picked up a couple of months ago. #31 (left) has been stained with red oak stain. I will use the same on #32 (right) when I have finished sanding it. I had actually started #32 a couple of weeks ago and set it aside for later. I patterned it after the Rubberset 400, but at the time I was a little careless and made some mistakes on it. However, today, I took my time and worked out the mistakes. I made it so it would hold the new horse hair knot I got in the mail yesterday. Tomorrow, I will finish sanding it and put the stain on it.

The #31 (left) still needs to be finished with polyurethane, and the knot needs to be set. The knot is a Virginia Sheng two-band finest badger. I think this handle was made for it. HA! As a matter of fact it was. This brush is destined to be a favorite.

Jayaruh #22 Dry Fitting Session: Horse Hair Knot

I received three horse hair knots today and did a dry fit with the Jayaruh #22 handle. This probably is not going to be the final home for the knot. I just want to see how it would look in this handle. The reddishness of the knot goes well with the red oak handle. I will be making some more handles from some walnut that I have on hand and using the horse knots in them. I will probably give them a reddish stain too.

Horse hair is used in brushes for men who have religious objections to boar or badger hair. Jews and Muslims generally fall into that category. So, horse hair or synthetic brushes are acceptable for their use.

New Knots Arrive

Two packages arrived today from China. One had a two-band finest badger knot, and the other contained three 21x70 horse hair knots. Right now I only have one handle without a knot, the Jayaruh #22. I got to work widening and deepening the hole for the horse hair knot.
