Some New Woods

Sparrow on TSD sent me two pieces of Japanese Horse Chestnut wood to make into brush handles.

Charlie on TSD sent me a box of cut offs from the Louisville Slugger Factory and Museum. I am going to see if I can craft some brush handles from them.

He is also getting out of straight shaving, and he very generously included his Drygulch Leatherworks 2.5" Barber's Strop with Latigo.

New Woods

I had three packages in the mail today. 1, 2, 3... One Virginia Sheng silvertip badger knot, two knots from Jorge (boar and finest badger), and three sticks of wood from Rob in Canadia (spalted tamarind, pheasant wood, and bocote).

New Wood: Pau Ferro

I got this stick of Pau Ferro in the mail today. It is a gift from Rob in Canadia. He has three of my brushes, and now it looks like I am making him a fourth. Thanks, Rob, for the wood. It is beautiful.

Libidibia ferrea, formerly Caesalpinia ferrea, and commonly known as pau ferro, Brazilian ironwood, or leopard tree, is a tree found in Brazil and Bolivia.

The first thing I noticed was that it was a heavy piece of wood. Fortunately, I have a new saw blade, and it did a great job of cutting it down to size. I first cut a length and then cut it into a square shape: 1 1/2 inch.

Next, I took off the corners making it an octagonal shape.

 Then, I cut cut it into three different lengths. Now, I have three potential brush handles.

Cut Up Some Handle Stock

I got some new woods: dark walnut and mahogany.

I cut the stock into squares.

I cut the stock into octagons.

I cut the stock into workable lengths.
That gave me 16 potential shaving brush handles.

I took a few of these workable lengths to a neighbor's and used his drill press to drill holes for the knots using a forstner bit.

New Woods

I got two new woods yesterday. Today, I cut them into usable sizes. There are two or three brushes in each stick. I have plenty of wood to get me to brush #100. Dark walnut and mahogany are the two woods I got. I have enough purple heart for two brush handles, enough oak for five or six, and plenty of hickory.

Here is the walnut and mahogany cut up. The purple heart is stuck in there for effect.
