Rubberset 200-5

 On our way back from Travelers Rest today, we stopped at an antique store, and I found this nice vintage shaving brush. The Rubberset 200-5 is in very good shape for its age.

I polished the handle a bit.

Update: I did a bowl lather with Proraso Green.

My prep was just a cold water rinse. The Williams Mug Shave Soap face-lathered well with the Rubberset 400 brush. I did two passes with the Gem Junior Bar Lather Catcher Razor with an Sha-Ve-Zee SE blade and ended up with a close, comfortable shave. After a cold water rinse, I finished off with Family Dollar Spice AS. I am clean, smooth, and refreshed...

Rubberset 400 Restore

I was sent this Ruberset 400 #4 by a fellow shaver on TSD. He wanted it polished up and replace the knot with an Omega 49 knot. Well, when I got it, I was surprised that the knot was original and really appeared to be in good shape. I cleaned it all up, washed the knot, and decided that it might be best to keep the knot. So, I contacted him and shared my thoughts.

Right out of the package with the Omega 49.

The knot appears to be a great knot.

This is after I buffed the handle a bit.

I did a little hand polishing with these results.

I decided to do a test to see how it lathers. I used Williams, and boy did it perform. After communicating with Doug, I decided that I will use it for tomorrow's shave and see how it performs face lathering.

If this were my brush, I would not replace the knot. If tomorrow's shave goes well, I will just polish up the handle and send it back to Doug. What a great brush!

Omega Pro 49 Knot Harvest

I just received this brush today. I am harvesting the knot to go in a Rubberset 400 handle.

I use a 5/16th drill bit to remove the knot.
I drill through the bottom and it pushes the knot out the top.

I put the not in a vice and use a hack saw to saw through the ferrule.

I cover the hairs and then clean up the plug on my belt sander.

All done. Ready for the Rubberset 400 handle.

Update: 5/21/18

The Rubberset 400 brush handle arrived today, and I fitted and set the Omega Pro 49 knot in it.

Rubberset 200 Restore

I am expecting this Rubberset 200 brush today that I will be restoring. I am chomping at the bit to get my hands on it.

Update: November 2, 6:30 PM

The brush arrives with two 24mm boar knots.

The knot is removed.

The ferrule is cleaned up.

Dry fitting the knot.

The ferrule unscrews from the handle.

Paint applied to the lettering.

All clean and ready to have the knot set.

I prepared the handle for the knot by putting a piece of pvc pipe in the bottom and then putting a quarter on top of that to provide a place to glue the knot. I epoxied the pvc and the quarter in place.

In the mean time I have lathered the knot to prepare it for setting tomorrow.

All finished and ready to go. The RS 200 will be going along with JR#238 and JR#239 to live in Mission, TX.
