Cholula Synthetic

This handle was made from a large Cholula Hot Sauce lid. I drilled it out, sanded it down, and stained it with dark walnut. I set a 22mm black Maggard synthetic in it.

This was my second brush with the big lid handle. Back in January I made one with an Omega boar knot.

New Cholula Boar Brush

I finished off a bottle of Cholula hot sauce at a restaurant and asked if I could keep the lid. They said sure. It was the large bottle. I had never seen the big one before. I have made several travel  brushes with the small lids, but I wanted to make a brush with the big lid.

Some brushes I made
with small lids.

I had a boar knot that I had harvested from an Omega 1065 brush.

I bored out the cap to accept the knot. I stained it a dark walnut and finished it with polycrylic finish.

Two More Cholula Brushes

I received two badger and one boar knot from a  fellow shaver on TSD. Today, I took the badger knots and made two Cholula brush handles for them. I bought a drawer knob at Home Depot for $.98 to incorporate into one of my Cholula brush handles.

I drilled a hole in the center of the Cholula lid so I could attach it to the knob.

Here is the dry fitting of the knob, cap, and knot.

A second lid I had already fitted to one of the badger knots. I did a clear natural finish on it.

On the first lid, I stained it with ebony stain and attached it to the knob. I then put a polyurethane finish on it. After everything had dried, I set the knots in the handles with epoxy. In the picture below are (left to right) a badger Cholula I completed on February 4, a horse hair Cholula brush that I completed back on February 18, and today's new brushes: the ebony Cholula and the Natural Cholula.

Another Cholula Brush

I had a Cholula lid, and I had a spare horse hair knot, so I prepped the lid and fitted the knot. Then I finished the lid with pecan stain/poly. I set the knot with silicone. Now, I have another Cholula Brush.

New Cholula Travel Brush

I got some 19mm synthetic knots from Virginia Shaving, and today I took one of my Cholula lids and opened up the hole so the knot would fit. I then sealed/stained it with some Minwax Ebony, and put a coat of polyurethane on it. Now it is drying.

Cholula Brush Upgrade

The Cholula brushes are made from the lids of Cholula Hot Sauce. They will fit nicely in a medicine bottle for travel. I decided to upgrade on of the handles with an extended handle. I made it out of a piece of  walnut. I started by cutting a cube 27 mm on the side. I rounded it and then shaped it.

I have glued the two pieces together and sealed the raw wood. Once it dries, I will put a coat of polyurethane on it to finish it off.

February 8, 2016

On Friday, February 5, I decided to make another handle for my other Cholula brush. In the process, I got too close to the saw and cut the end of my thumb. It is better today, no infection. It will probably take me another month or so before I am back to normal. Anyhow, I did finish the other handle, and here are the two brushes finished.

That is the thumb I injured. OUCH!

My thumb was injured on February 5. I started taking pictures on the eighth to document its healing.

Pal Adjustable Arrives

I made a trade with Myles on The Shave Den. He got my Jayaruh #6 High Mountain Badger brush and I got this nice Pal Adjustable razor. It was on an eBay Buy It Now listing. The Schick Injector blades were a bonus. They were not listed in the BIN listing. They are worth $7 alone.

Here are some photos from the BIN listing.

Myles and I had done a trade before, and I decided to pif him one of my Cholula travel brushes as well.

Jayaruh #6 Trade

Package wrapped and ready to go.

I was contacted by Michael in Alabama about making a brush for him. We communicated back and forth, and he decided he liked the JR #6 with the High Mountain badger knot. He is sending me a Pal Adjustable Injector razor for the brush. I also decided that I would gift him one of my Cholula travel brushes since he is a repeat trading partner.
