My birthday is tomorrow. During the week of my birthday, I like to use birth era razors. Because I am participating in Open Comb OCtober this year I have not been doing BE razors this week. However, I am breaking out my 46-47 Gillette Super Speed today. I will be using my 46-47 Aristocrat tomorrow.

What is it with me and Black Handle Super Speeds? I now have a hand full of them. This one I could not pass up. It is a W1, first quarter 1976. That makes it son Philip's birth quarter razor. I would give it to him, but he uses an electric razor.

I started off with Proraso Pre Shave. The Jeff's Soap Shaving Soap face-lathered well with the Jayaruh #213 Synthetic brush. I did the two passes with the 47 Gillette SS and a Gillette Silver Blue blade and ended up with a close, comfortable shave. After a cold water rinse, I finished off with Thayer's Lemon WH and then Florida Water. I am clean, smooth, and refreshed...

48-49 Superspeed

I saw this Superspeed on eBay, and the description of it was only:

Vintage GILLETTE "SUPER SPEED" Nickle Plated Safety Razor w Red Plastic Case 

It was a 40s style Superspeed that was really dirty, but that is all I could tell form the pictures and the description. I took a chance on it and got it for $15.99 with free shipping. 

Here is what it looked like when I received it.  The underside was all soaped up and there was an O3 Gillette Super Stainless blade still in it. I cleaned up the bottom and there was no date code and there was the hook on the center bar, so that means it was made in 1948-49.

When opening the doors, the knob dropped down. That is an easy fix. I just tightened the crimp and now all is well. Doors open and close smoothly.

The razor cleaned up pretty well. Here are pictures of the razor after cleaning.
