This is the first shave with the 20s Old Type. I had bought it just for the handle to use on my English NEW, but I am very impressed with its performance this morning. My strop came in yesterday, so today I stropped the J.M. Schmid. The Kiss My Face Cool Mint moisture shave face lathered well with the VDH Natural Boar. I used the str8 on my cheeks and finished everything else with two passes of the Schick M adjustable and Schick blade. It was a mighty fine shave. The VDH Luxury Shave soap face lathered well with VDH Natural Boar brush as cheap soap month continues. Today, I used my new vintage J.M. Schmid straight razor for the first time. I was going to just do my right cheek, but that went so well that I switched hands and did my left cheek as well. I finished off with my Schick M Adjustable and Schick stainless blade. After a second pass, I had achieved my close, comfortable shave. A cold water rinse, followed by Thayers cucumber WH  and Mennen Skin Bracer after shave left me clean, smooth, and refreshed... Since my strop won't arrive until Saturday, I will wait until then to revisit the J.M. Schmid.

Cheap Soap Month continues with Van Der Hagen Deluxe Shave Soap. It was a great face lather using my VDH Natural Boar brush that I had face lifted. For a cheap brush, it did a marvelous job. I did just two passes with my Schick M Adjustable with Schick stainless blade and ended with a clean, comfortable shave. After a cold water rinse, I finished off with Thayers Cucumber WH and Aqua Velva Ice Blue after shave. I am clean, smooth, and refreshed... I am also stoked because my new J.M. Schmidt straight razor is scheduled for delivery today. Woo-hoo!

Cheap Soap Month: Shave of the Day - 7/1

During the Month of July, I will be using my "cheap soaps and creams." Cheap is defined by soaps and creams $10 and under. I have ten of them, so I will get a chance to use each three times during the month. Daily, I will be rotating through three after shaves. After ten days, I will change razor and brush.

Cheap soap month starts out with Col. Conk Lime Shave Soap. I got an acceptable bowl lather with my VDH Nartural Boar brush. Two passes and touch ups with my Schick M Adjustable and Schick blade left me with a close, comfortable shave. After my cold water rinse, I finished off with Thayers Cucumber WH and Pinaud Clubman after shave. Thus starts Cheap Soap Month and No Buy July.

Van Der Hagen Premium Boar Brush Re-do

This is the brush that comes with the Van Der Hagen Premium Shave Set. It is their Premium Boar Brush. I decided that I wanted to change the looks of this brush. It had seams that were evident. I reduced them. I gave the brush two coats of  a silverish paint and added an o-ring at the base of the bristles and in the two grooves in the handle. I had intended to paint the grooves with some black paint, but I decided to give the o-rings a go. They add to the grip of the handle. We shall see how it lathers now. If I don't like the o-rings on the handle, I will remove them and just paint the grooves.

The VDH Premium Shave Set

New with EJ89 Handle

I put the handle from my EJ89 on my newly plated Gillette New head.  The New's handle is quite light, and so the razor is top heavy. The EJ89 gives it a great balance.
