Turning Day - 396 to 404

Today was beautiful. I got busy on the lathe and turned nine handles. They are now ready for the holes. The knots are on order, so I may wait until they come in to finish these brushes. These will be brushes 396-404.

This one is being done by request. It will be Jayaruh #404. It is oak. It has flutes on the bias. It will be the home of a 30mm Tuxedo synthetic knot.

Today, I worked on #400, the 400 type handle, and on #404. I opened up the hole for the knot and  put the number on the bottom.

I am going to try to do two handles a day until they are completed. Today, I put the holes in #399 and 401 and branded the bottoms.

Now they have their numbers.

I started out to do three handles today: 396, 398 and 402. However, after I finished them with the first coat of polycrylic, I decided to go ahead and finish the last two handles.

The temperature had risen, and so I got out and did the holes and numbers on the last two handles: 397 and 403. Then, I put the first coat of polycrylic on them.

Now, I am waiting on the knots to arrive.

I finished up Jayaruh #369 today. It has a 30mm Maggard Black & White knot in it.

I started this one a couple of weeks ago, but I just received the knot to finish it. It is the knot I harvested from an Omega 49 brush, my go to knot for 400 type brushes.

New Life for an Old Brush

I got this brush back in October 2018. It appears to be a Rubberset 153. The knot was worn out. It was not what I was after, but I set it aside thinking I would one day restore it. Today was that day.

I removed the knot and drilled out the hole. I resized it for a 24mm synthetic horse from Maggard Razors. I am happy that it will have a new life in my den.

This brush was commissioned for a gift. I took advantage of the weather on Saturday to complete it. It will go out Monday.

The handle is oak. The top is stained with a dark walnut stain and the handle is finished with polycrylic. The knot is an Omega 49 boar.

Jayaruh #360 Begins

I ordered four different woods for brushes. I usually get 1.5x1.5 x12. I made a mistake ordering this stick of osage orange. I ordered 1x1x12. Well, it would normally be too small to make a brush handle with, but I got creative. I decided to make a small travel brush with it. I have a 20mm Tuxedo type synthetic knot coming for this brush. It should be here by Monday.

I am making it the size of this made in England boar brush from my 1930s travel kit.

This is a shape I have used on several brushes. It is done without a lathe.

The knots arrived. While I was waiting, I made one more handle. These pictures are the knots dry fitted before finishing the handles.

I finished up the brushes.

All done and ready to go out into the world and travel.

Update: April 29, 2019

Had my first shave with the #360 travel brush. It did a fine job lathering the Eskimo Tuxedo.
