Jayaruh #458 Synthetic

Back in 2020, I made four Civil War type shaving brushes. I had turned an extra blank that has been sitting around since then. Today, I got it out and finished it off. I had to make the hole for the new knot.  Then I stained it with some dark walnut stain and wound the top with some jute. I finished it with polycrylic and lastly set the knot. I got the knot as a gift from Boti Brush with an order I had with them.

Jayaruh #383

I completed this brush today when I set the two-band badger knot. This is the fourth and last of the Civil War type brushes I have made.

Update: January 22

I have had three shaves with JR #383. Here are some pictures showing the bloom. I really like this two-band badger knot, and the handle has a very nice feel for face lathering.

Jayaruh #380 Civil War Replica Brush

After making JR#379, I was inspired to make this Civil War Replica brush. I fitted it with an horse hair knot.

The Civil War Replica Brush is finished.

Civil War Type Brushes

I was prompted to make a Civil War type shaving brush by VintageLife. See the whole story here: http://jrshaving.blogspot.com/2020/01/civil-war-replica-brush.html

It is now ready for a knot. Here it is.

The first has the horse hair knot dry fitted.

The second is an Omega 66 boar dry fitted. After he choosed the knot, I will set it and take final pictures.

I made a second handle. Here they are side by side with the knots alternated.

It has been decided. JR#379 gets the Omega 66 boar knot, and JR#380 gets the horse hair knot.

Civil War Replica Brush

I am making a Civil War replica brush for another shaver. I have been thinking about it for a while, and today, I took advantage of some good weather and got a good start. I have some knots coming in the mail Monday, so it looks like I may finish this up then. Here is what I have today.

Here I have the shape and have wrapped the top with jute.

I opened the top using a nickel as my guide.

I stained the handle with dark walnut.

I branded it with JR 379.

Here it is after I finished it with polycrylic.

January 7, 2020

I had the horse hair knot arrive today. Here is how it looks in the handle (dry fit). I am expecting the boar this afternoon. More to come.

I went to Lowes and found some neutral colored jute. I wrapped the top with it.

Update: January 7, 2020

My brushes came in last night, but I did not go to the box until this morning. I retrieved the Omega brush and began to liberate it from its handle.

I cut off the bottom of the handle.

I cut down the side of the handle to remove it.

I cut down opposite sides of the sleeve to remove it. The knot is liberated.
After using my Dremel to shape the bottom of the knot, I fitted it into the Civil War handle.

The JR#379 brush is finished. It has been decided to take the Omega 66 boar knot.
