JR#31 Going to New Home

My friend, Don on TSD, contacted me with an interest in JR#31. He wants to refinish the handle in a driftwood finish. He really likes the VS finest badger knot, too. He knew that it had been set with silicone, so he asked that I remove the knot for him. I was impressed with the hold that the silicone provided, but it gave up the knot without incident after several forceful attempts. That leads me to believe that the hold would have lasted a lifetime had that been the intent.

Next, I will clean out the hole and the bottom of the knot and send it off to Don so he can do his magic. So, this brush will become a collaborative project.I will ask Don to provide some pictures of his progress and finished product.

Jayaruh #31 Complete

I started and completed the #31 on December 1. Unfortunately, I did not take progress pictures. I got in the Virginia Sheng two-band finest badger knot and took the first three pictures. Then I polyurethaned the handle and after it dried, I set the knot. Today, December 12, I am just getting around to a test lather. This is one fine knot. It will be entering rotation on December 21.

Three Brushes Completed

I completed brushes 31, 32, and 33 today when I siliconed the knots in the handles. Twenty-four hours and they will be ready to enter service.

31 and 32 are walnut stained with red oak.
33 is wild cherry stained with golden oak.

Jayaruh #31 and Jayaruh #32 Begin

Today, I worked on the #31 and #32. They are both made from the walnut stock I picked up a couple of months ago. #31 (left) has been stained with red oak stain. I will use the same on #32 (right) when I have finished sanding it. I had actually started #32 a couple of weeks ago and set it aside for later. I patterned it after the Rubberset 400, but at the time I was a little careless and made some mistakes on it. However, today, I took my time and worked out the mistakes. I made it so it would hold the new horse hair knot I got in the mail yesterday. Tomorrow, I will finish sanding it and put the stain on it.

The #31 (left) still needs to be finished with polyurethane, and the knot needs to be set. The knot is a Virginia Sheng two-band finest badger. I think this handle was made for it. HA! As a matter of fact it was. This brush is destined to be a favorite.
