Double Ring and Single Ring Compared

The Gillette Double Ring came first. The DR I have was manufactured in 1905 according to its serial number. My SR was made in 1911. It is postulated that the Single Ring came into existence because it was a bit easier to manufacture. I don't know if that is true or not. The razors appear to be almost identical except for the number of rings on the neck. They have the same head and screw mechanism. They each have the serial number on the barrel of the knob part.

My DR is in exceptionally good shape. The teeth are straight and there are no cracks in the handle. My SR is in very good shape, but the end teeth are bent a bit.

Update: June 14, 2017

For a comparison, I shaved with both DR and SR razors today. On the first pass I used the DR on the right side and the SR on the left. I used the same blade in each razor. On the second pass, I used the SR on the right and DR on the left. I noticed no measurable difference in the two razors. They are basically the same razor except for the rings.

I am doing DE shaves with my Gillette razors during DEcember. I have 24 of them.

I haven't used a boar brush in a long time, so I was very pleased with the performance of the Omega Pro 48 knot in my JR#61 handle. The Arko Shaving Stick face-lathered well with my Jayaruh #61 boar brush. Two passes and touch ups with the Gillette Single Ring with a Personna Super blade gave me a close, comfortable shave. I got a very close shave riding the cap with the Gillette Single Ring. After a cold water rinse and alum block, I finished off with T.N. Dickinson's WH and then Pinaud Clubman After Shave. Single Ring Clean Up

Today, I soaked the razor and the blade banks in a solution of Dawn and hot water. I rinsed with clean water and dried. Here are pictures after the clean up.

Single Ring Arrives

My Gillette Single Ring arrived today. By the serial number it was manufactured in 1911. It has the metal case and two blade holders. There are also two vintage blades. I measured the blades and they are 0.0065" thick. Modern DE blades are about 0.0035" thick.

I Finally Got My Single Ring

I won this Gillette Single Ring razor in an eBay auction. It was the final razor in my list of razors I would like to eventually have. This one is from 1911, so it is about 115 years old and in remarkably nice condition. There appears to be some plate wear on the head and a few bent teeth, but it is 115 years old. The case looks great and it has two blade holders. I can't tell much about the two blades. I will post about them when they arrive. These are pictures from the auction. The seller is a fellow shaver on TSD Jorvaljr.
