Jayaruh #14 Goes to New Home

Today, I packed up the #14 and shipped it off to Dzia Dzia. He was the one who conceived of it. I just put it into works. I hope to see it show up on some SOTDs on TSD.

Test Lathering

I glued in the new knots for #14 and #18 yesterday. Today, I did a test lather with RazoRock P.160. I loaded each brush for 30 seconds and lathered in my green glass bowl.

Barrel Brush Holder

It was suggested that I make a matching holder for the Jayaruh #14 Barrel brush. In the first picture I have magically added my Whipped Dog Silvertip knot to the Barrel.

In the next picture you can see from another angle that the holder has been recessed for the Barrel to sit in it up to the first ring. As I was working on this today, probably a couple of hours, my wife thought she was going to be a brush widow. I finally finished and took her to Applebees.

After a Red Oak stain/sealer and a gray wash

After I did the stain/sealer, I grabbed up the remaining part of the octagonal blank and cut it in two. Then I spent some time shaping a couple of new handles. The one on the left is patterned after the Omega Pro 98. The one on the right has been rounded and tapered on the ends. It may be embellished more in the future.  I did all this while the stain/sealer had a chance to dry up. Then I mixed up the gray wash and applied it to the holder. Results are in the above picture.

I added a piece at the top joint to act as a stop for my Single Edge razors. I took some pictures to show it in action.

Gray Wash for Barrel Handle

Last night, I inscribed the JR 14 on the bottom of the barrel. Today, I applied the gray wash. It gives the barrel an old look. Next I painted the hoops. Now, I need to get a matte clear coat for it. Polyurethane is a possibility.

I got a few coats of satin finish polyurethane on the barrel this afternoon.

Barrel Handle Jayaruh #14

I was contacted by a gentleman on TSD who wanted a brush handle in the shape of a barrel. His vision was:

• brush with a medium size quality boar knot? This is my idea of a finish..... A medium red oak stain with a gray over wash with the bands being a dark rust color. All with a matte finish. Burned into the barrel would be the initials JR. 

It sounded like a little much for me, but he said he would do the finishing if I could get the shape. I got to thinking about it, and I thought I might give it a try. So, this is what I have so far after some whittling with my Swiss Army knife and some sanding with coarse sandpaper. 

Update: July 20

I worked on the barrel handle today using my Swiss Army knife initially by making the hoops stand out. I used my Dremel to smooth out between the hoops, and then went to some 180 grit sandpaper to smooth out more and define the hoops more. Finally, I created a knot hole using my normal method of drawing the outline, drilling holes, joining the holes, and then smoothing it out with the drum sander.

Update: July 21

The barrel keeps calling my name. I got out and did more sanding with 220 grit sandpaper. I cleaned it with paint thinner and let it dry. Then I used some Minwax Red Oak Stain and Seal to stain it. Below are the results. In the mean time, I am researching a gray over wash.

I did a test for the gray wash on a piece of wood that I had did a test for the stain on previously. Not too bad, but I think I need to lighten it up a bit.
