I started this new handle today. It is one of my favorite designs. It is labor intensive, but it is worth the effort. I started with an octagonal shape. I then used a drum sander to shape the bottom.
I drilled out 1/4 inch holes for birch dowels.
I glued in the birch dowels.
I cut the dowels off and sanded them flush with the handle.
I drilled out the hole for the knot.
I cut accent grooves above and below the dowels.
I did lots of hand sanding and shaping.
I put this knot in for the picture. Next, I will be branding the handle and then putting a clear finish on it.
