I attempted the first pass with a Rolls razor (1947) that I just received. It tugged a lot, so I set it aside and got out the Gillette NEW again. The ninth shave with this Shark blade. Two passes with no issues. What's with this blade? How far will it go? We shall see. Near BBS shave. I will attempt to get an edge back on the Rolls and perhaps give it another shot later.

Rolls Razor

The Rolls Razor is a very unique razor. It is not a safety razor. It is not double edged. It is more like a straight edged razor on a stick. The razor itself is a hollow ground razor with a guard/stand attached. The razor comes in a case that contains the mechanisms for sharpening and stropping the razor and the handle. I ran across a group of three on Ebay and put in my bid. I won. One set was incomplete, but two were complete. One was a little rough, but this is the "good" one. As a bonus, it turns out that this razor is from my birth year, 1947. Pretty cool.

Rolls Razor open case. The blade handle on the right is attached to the honing mechanism lever via a spring-loaded bearing. The nickel plated blade at the bottom is attached to the honing bar that slides on the red leather strop.

The grey honing stone is part of the closing lid. The leather strop and the hone lids are not interchangeable as the blade needs to push against the hone but pull against the strop.

The blade has a safety guard with pivot action that allows it to vary the shaving angle while providing safe operation. The head of the blade handle locks perpendicular to the blade using a slide type of action with the spring-loaded bearing providing additional stability.

Proraso Sandalwood Shave Cream
Simogue 1305 Boar Brush
Gillette NEW LC English Made with Bar Handle
Shark Super Chrome SS (8)

The little dab of Proraso whipped up into a prodigious amount of wonderful lather. Two passes and a little clean-up with the Shark blade made for a great shave. This blade is proving to be a most efficient blade.  With this long comb NEW it seems, I can do no wrong.

After the face wash, I used the Rise Shave Cream as a pre-shave. It is a brushless and latherless shave cream.  Alone, it doesn't do the trick for me, but as a pre-shave it does make a positive contribution to a good shave.

This is the Gem Micromatic Clog-pruf I received in the mail yesterday. I got it all cleaned up, and today I took it on our maiden voyage. It was an excellent shave: no nicks, no cuts, no abrasions.

Shave of the Day 7/9

Dove Men's Face Wash
Williams Mug Shaving Soap
Semogue 1305 Boar Brush
Eversharp-Schick I-1 (First Shave)
Schick SS Blade
CWR
Dickinson's Witch Hazel
Penaud Clubman AS

New to me is this sweet little Schick I-1 razor. Picked it up from eBay along with a Gem Micromatic Clog-Pruf. Cleaned up very nicely and shaves great. It is very forgiving and delivered a great first shave. This will definitely be in my rotation. I will be trying out the CP tomorrow.

EBay Score - Schick, Gem Clog-Pruf

I scored these two razors on eBay. I was after the Schick type I-1. It was produced from 1955-1958. It was the biggest change in the style of the razor in 20 years. This one was offered along with a Gem Micromatic Clog-Pruf razor. It is known to be the "Goldilocks" model in the Micromatic line, in between the aggressive Open Comb, and the light Flying Wing (bullet tip).

The Schick had a blade in it that was stuck. I got it out and cleaned it up. The Clog-Pruf had a lot of petina. On the left side of the head was a really badly "corroded" spot. I was able the buff that out and it cleaned up very nicely. This turned out to be a great score for me. I was after the Schick and got the Clog-Pruf as a bonus.

Tonight's shave will be with the Schick. Tomorrow, I will try out the Clog-Pruf.

Update in the Schick:  I paired the Schick with a genuine Schick stainless steel blade, and the shave was magical. The words, smooth and flawless, also come to mind. This is a very forgiving and friendly razor: mild but effective. This one will definitely enter my rotation.

Here are some pictures after the clean-up.

Shave of the Day 7/8

Dove Men's Face Wash
Rise Shave Cream
TOBS Lavender SC
Frank Shaving Finest Badger Brush
Parker 94R Hefty
Wilkinson Sword SS blade
CWR
Dickinson's Witch Hazel
Aqua Velva Ice Blue AS

I am revisiting the Parker 94R today. I found it to be too aggressive in the past. Not sure what it was with that. I decided to give the Wilkinson Swords a chance. That seems to do the trick for this razor. Also a little different with this shave was using the Rise Shave Cream as a base for the TOBS. The Rise is meant to apply directly to the skin without lathering, so I applied it after my face wash and let it sit while I made my lather. It was an excellent shave. Since I had experienced aggressive shaves with this razor before, I was concentrating on being easy-handed, and I was rewarded greatly.

Semogue 1305 Boar Brush
Edwin Jagger 89
Wilkinsword SS blade

The Proraso Sandalwood Shaving Cream is a new experience for me. It lathered up very well from an almond size dollop, and was enough for three passes and touch-ups. It has a nice woodsy scent that does not overpower. Excellent shave.

Frank Shaving Finest Badger Brush
Schick E3 w/home-made handle
Genuine Schick SS blade
CWR

Happy Fourth of July. Today, I revisited the Schick E3 with a genuine Schick blade. Very nice shave. I broke out the Proraso for this shave and the FS brush did a great job with the lather.

Shave of the Day 7/3

Dove Men's Face Wash
TOBS Lavender SC
Parker Pure Badger Brush
Schick E2
Schick SS blade
CWR
Dickinson's Witch Hazel

The SE Tour is over so today, so I revisited the Schick E2, but I made sure I had a genuine Schick blade in it. The shave was still aggressive, but not nearly as aggressive as it was with the CVS blade I used before. Great shave.

Dove Men's Face Wash

Semogue 1305 Boar Brush
Schick E3 w/home-made handle
CVS SS blade

Today ends the 10 day SE Tour. The Schick E3 was my Dad's razor. He made the handle for it, but that's all I know about it. He gave it to my brother, who gave it to me. The winner of the SE Tour was the Gem Pushbutton for a Perfect/Near Perfect shave.

Shave of the Day 7/1

Day 9 of SE Tour

Dove Men's Face Wash
TOBS Lavender SC
Frank Shaving Finest Badger Brush
Schick E3 w/home-made handle
CVS SS blade
CWR
Dickinson's Witch Hazel
Aqua Velva Blue Ice AS

Another good shave, but I am afraid that this brand of blade is not for me. I will see if I can find another brand to try. These blades seem to be pretty harsh. This E3 is a rescued razor. The original handle disintegrated, and I fashioned a new handle from wood. TOBS continues to astound me.
